The London-based Baltic Exchange daily publishes a number that assesses the cost of moving major dry bulk commodities by sea. The Baltic Dry Index is an average of Baltic Supramax, Panamax, and Capesize indices and measures the demand for shipping capacity versus the supply of dry bulk carriers. As such it is an economic indicator of the demand for raw materials such as coal, metalic ores, building materials, grains, and other commodities.
